*HALF TERM NEWS*
Young Actors Performance at the Waterside Arts Centre
On Monday February 11th Immerse Young Actors (IYACT)
and the Junior Drama Drop-In group presented their
first main stage performance at the Waterside Arts
Centre. Since IYACT and the Junior Drama Drop-In
groups formed in the summer most have attended every
week. The IYACT sessions are aimed at the 15 to 21 age
group and are a unique opportunity to receive an
intensive, crash course in acting and drama techniques
delivered by experienced professionals. The Saturday
Drama Drop-In, which is facilitated by Tracie Daly and
Deanne Lee, is aimed at the younger ones (10-14) and
is designed to be a little more casual and fun.
However, both groups performed fantastically well in
their respective shows.
IYACT performed their rendition of Ted Hughes'
'Sean, The Fool, The Devil and The Cats', whilst
the Junior Drama Drop-In devised a piece in response
to a brief set by the Southbank Centre in London.
Operation Soapbox is a nationwide project
involving an estimated 10,000 young people across the
country. The brief encourages young people to explore
the issues that matter to them and then to think
creatively about how to share these thoughts. The
Junior Drama Drop-In group decided to create 'A
Midsummer Nights Sleepover' - a magic box taking
them on a Shakespearian journey into a land where
fairies and elves once existed. Tracy described it as;
"A delightful mix of theatrical device all designed to
engage the imagination"; and so it was.
With a wonderful set by Phil Ratcliffe from the
Contact theatre in Manchester and great performances
from some budding young Trafford talent, both
groups provided a wonderful night of youth theatre
having spent little more than five months attending
sessions - a great achievement which all involved
should be proud of. Thanks should also go to Leila Murton and Caroline Gleaves for their work in putting
the show together, and a special thanks should go to
the Stretford Youth Theatre Trust and Waterside Arts
Centre for making the Immerse project possible.

Teenage band wanted
Quarantine, an innovative and award
winning theatre company based in the North West is looking
for performers from Greater Manchester for its next
co-commission with Contact and Tramway, Old People,
Children and Animals. The performance is about
responsibility and will be created with and performed by
old people (over 65) who dance or who used to dance, and
young people (under 18) who make music. Old People,
Children and Animals will be rehearsed and performed at
Contact in Manchester in June, followed by performances at
Tramway in Glasgow.
Quarantine creates critically acclaimed performance work
with both trained and untrained performers. All work is
created from the personal experiences and lives of those
taking part. The company is interested in enabling people
from all backgrounds to make excellent work; to blur the
distinction between professional and non-professional
performance. It seeks to make work that pushes the
boundaries of what theatre is and becomes an experience of
value for those taking part. Previous work has been
created with and performed by refugees (EatEat, 2003),
a group of young working-class white men (White Trash,
2004), three generations of a Glasgow family
(Butterfly, 2004) and a dancer and his mum (Susan &
Darren, 2006).
"I've been interested in making this project for several
years. As my own mum has got older – she's 86 this year –
I've gradually realised that the relationship of
responsibility has shifted. Now it's up to us (me and my
brother and sister) to do the looking-after. So, in making
this show, I want to have a look at what we think we're
responsible for - in our immediate lives but also more
widely, in the rest of the world. Like all Quarantine
shows it will be full of both the ordinary and
extraordinary moments of people's experience – as well as
some great dancing and fabulous music..."
Richard Gregory, director, Old People, Children and
Animals
Quarantine is looking for a band whose members are aged
under 18. Quarantine is not looking for people with
experience of acting. All performers need to be available
from April 21st until June 21st 2008. Performers will be
paid. Interested applicants should get in touch via MySpace:
www.myspace.com/qtine
All expressions of interest should be submitted to
Quarantine as soon as possible. Workshops take place week
beginning 18th February 2008.
Old People, children and animals will take place at
Contact, Manchester from 10 - 14 June 2008 and Tramway in
Glasgow from 18 - 21 June.

www.qtine.com or call
