“I found the dress while working on land surrounding a factory close to my childhood home. It was a sinister experience at first; the dress was in a small clearing scattered with empty cider bottles and discarded pornography. Although the find was disturbing and raised lots of questions, the colour and style of the dress and the location also set me on a sentimental path, thinking of happy times playing games with my sister and how those times too, like the dress, were just fragile memories." Joe Simpson, Untitled.
Visitors’ Choice Award £200

Joe SimpsonPainter Joe Simpson graduated from University of Leeds in 2007 and has a studio at Bankley Studios, Manchester. Joe is currently working on incorporating a musical soundtrack with series of paintings, which includes Visitors Choice Prize winner, Untitled.

"If my paintings are to be likened to a moment in a film, I think they would definitely be particular moments where music is playing in the background and in this sense they can be understood as 'mood' pieces. Brought together as a collection they evoke the feel of a movie montage sequence, where the narrative shifts between key characters and depicts a passing of time with a song in the background to tie down a common theme and mood." Joe Simpson 2008.
